What are CCTV Cameras?

CCTV, also called closed-circuit television, is a camera system which allows you to keep an eye on what is happening in around your premises. CCTV cameras and monitors are connected to enable you or security personnel to view events live in real-time. Another important advantage with CCTV cameras is that footage can be archived for record or evidence for later reference.

Why are CCTV Cameras Called "Closed-Circuit"?

A CCTV system differs from a normal television broadcasting system because it forms a closed network, the footage captured is restricted to the premises’ network. The CCTV monitor does not receive publicly broadcasted content and is therefore not interfered by external broadcasting. The CCTV monitor will only display footage from security cameras installed on the premises.

Of course, CCTV systems have been around for a long time. However, recent developments and technology have made them more effective than ever in aiding law enforcement and in capturing evidence. For example, Integrated’s advanced face recognition FaceX system can be embedded in new types of CCTV cameras making them even more practical and versatile.

CCTV Types and Comparison

There are several types of CCTV camera options, but two types are most common:

  1. IP (internet protocol) CCTV cameras are the most popular type of cameras deployed in new projects. IP cameras provide much clearer and sharper resolution images as well as capabilities such as remote zooming, remote controls and repositioning. They can be set up to be controlled via a web browser which makes them even easier to use and control. Other useful features include real-time notifications when the CCTVs detect unusual movements e.g. at night. Users can also view live footage from any camera remotely through a computer or mobile device.
  2. Analog CCTV cameras are the classic option and have been around for decades. They are still widely used today and have the advantages of being more economical and offer stable performance. Like IP CCTV cameras, they are also able to store video locally for later reference.
Requirements for CCTV Systems

CCTV surveillance systems are a crucial part of any security setup, integrating seamlessly with alarm systems, fire safety, and other security measures to enhance overall protection. To be effective, CCTV systems must be installed correctly, ensuring easy access for users and law enforcement to review recordings. Professional standards govern aspects like camera clarity, system bandwidth, video signal-to-noise ratios, TV signal formats, and camera specifications. Here are five key areas to focus on:

  1. Video Quality (Clarity of footage, correct system timestamp, long term maintenance & warranty)
  2. Storage (Capacity, format, encryption requirements)
  3. Output (Media for output, format, quality)
  4. Playback (Ease of use, software capabilities, fast-forward, rewind, single or multi-screen display)
  5. System Performance (Search footage by time/date, ability to print or save footage with preserved timestamps)
Installation Locations and Usage Scenarios

CCTV systems are typically deployed in areas requiring continuous monitoring, such as banks, airports, upscale retail stores, shopping malls, casinos, military bases, campuses, police stations, offices and convenience stores. In commercial settings, CCTV systems can be monitored from a central control room or via monitors observing different zones. Some places, like power plants, where direct human monitoring may not be feasible, CCTV systems can be installed to record continuously or monitor specific events as directed.
